Question 2 Who Is Jesus?
He is the Son of God with the Father and the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 3.13-17 John Baptizes Jesus
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?”
But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.
When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Meditation
Jesus’ baptism was not symbolic. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were really there, and they were affirming Jesus to be the Son of God. The rest of the New Testament continues to reveal Jesus to us as God’s Son for our salvation.
When this truth comes to us, salvation comes to us. As the Son of God comes to save us, so we also become the sons of God by faith. Paul said, “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Galatians 3.26-27).
Prayer
Jesus, You are the Son of God and my Savior. Thank You for impressing that truth upon me in baptism and in Your word. Help me to trust in You alone for my salvation, for that is the only kind of salvation I can trust. Amen.
Hymn All Who Believe and Are Baptized
1 All who believe and are baptized
shall see the Lord's salvation;
baptized into the death of Christ,
they are a new creation;
through Christ's redemption they shall stand
among the glorious, heav'nly band
of ev'ry tribe and nation.
2 With one accord, O God, we pray:
grant us your Holy Spirit;
help us in our infirmity
through Jesus' blood and merit;
Grant us to grow in grace each day
that by this sacrament we may
eternal life inherit.
